Best backyard deer caliber?

I like to use my .222 and head shoot them. Works just fine out to 150 yards, provided I hold steady. Mrs. Mac uses an Uberti 1866 in 38 special (not magnum) with my 158 gr hand loads. She always gets her deer, and usually with a head or neck shot.

In your case, I'd use the 44. You can load it down as others have said. I can't imagine it wouldn't do a fine job on any whitetail.

Had a friend once who ran the rabbits out of his yard with a paint ball gun. He said it rolled them pretty good.

Depending on the range you might want to do the same thing, just not with paint balls.

When I worked at a jail I was introduced to Pepper Balls. 68 cal balls filled with concentrated pepper spray. One hit would be enough for a normal guy. Even the crazies could not take it.

Hit Bambi with one of those and it will not only hurt but will burn. I doubt you will get many return customers. As an added bonus, no noise and no evidence.
