A rave about the Mantis Laser Academy

I just got back from the range and wow!

I got the Laser Academy last week, and I have probably dry fired 400 shot overall.

The change in my accuracy was pretty dramatic - in fact, I moved my target back from 7 yards to 10 yards, because keeping the all in an 8" circle at 7 yards was no longer a challenge. Even at 10 yards, I had three of hundred shots out.

That may not be great shooting for everyone - or even most people, but it is a pretty big jump for me. In the last couple of months, I have had 2-3 shots out of 10 out at 7 yards, so getting to three shots of a hundred out is a pretty big improvement.

I am fired up. My goal this year is to become reasonably accurate - though I don't know what "reasonable" means exactly. Probably something like all my shot in an 8" circle at 25 yards - with no fliers?

I am in very large part practicing in preparation for carrying and an "occasional flier" sounds like a serious liability issue in a civilian self defense event.

At any rate, I am very motivated to keep shooting 100 rounds a day with the Laser Academy.

Dry fire is a worthwhile activity. If you want to clear 8" plates at 25 yards dry fire at small targets. Instead of say a light switch cover, being your "target", use one of the screws that holds it in place.

Aim small/shoot small.

The Laser Academy has some very downsized targets for this purpose.

I bought a Mantis Laser Academy set a little over a year ago. The big appeal is that it makes dry fire fun. I've spent a lot more trigger time. This has increased my awareness of the differences between the triggers on my guns. It records what you do and how you perform. I've used it more days than not and have noticed improvement as well.

Glad you've noticed improvement as well. Best of luck keeping it up.

Get a cheap laser boresight cartridge too (available from Amazon for about $10-15).

It stays constantly "on" and allows you to see when you move the gun while pressing the trigger, enabling you to easily see and correct errors in your technique.

It is a lot of fun. I have the Mantis X3 as well, and I found dry fire with that pretty tedious.

I am not sure how well that would work for me, but I am glad it works for you.

The cool part of the Laser Academy for me is the integration with the app on my phone. The app uses the phone’s camera to capture the location oh the laser do when the firing pin hits the back of the laser cartridge.

That way the app can score the shot audibly “10”, “9”, etc., and mark it on the image of the target on the phone’s screen,

I find that really helpful.

IMO, the laser bore sight cartridge gives more intuitive feedback compared to the Mantis app. As you press the trigger you can see the laser dot moving in real time to whatever shooting error you're doing.

I have a Mantis X10. I got it at the beginning of the pandemic.
