Opinions on the perfect nightstand handgun.

Even though I'm into revolvers I always considered the Glock G17 to be a perfict dependable handful of firepower. Many awesome handguns to be had but in an emergency I trust a G17 with a hand held flashlight.
I'm old school and I'll bet there's a lot of better ideas out there. Sure is a lot to pick from.

My perfect bedside gun has three criteria:

1. Begins with “Gl”

2. Ends with “ck”

3. Holds 13 or more rounds of “somebody picked the wrong house…”

Seriously though, LOTS of great choices out there…doesn’t need to be fancy, just reliable and shootable to whomever may need to use it to defend the home.

Currently, and for the past several months, it's been a Sig P226 with an integral light attached to the rail. I have a .40 S&W upper for it as well, but generally stay with the original 9mm tube. My loads are Speer GD's of the ~125 gr persuasion.

In our "last resort" room is a 12 ga. with 5 rounds of 00 buck and a M-4 length AR; as we live on a relatively isolated farm, better than 1/4 mile from our nearest neighbor...The retreat room is over the garage, in my wife's sewing emporium...one way in, and one way out and with good cellular coverage for police calls.

We don't investigate 'bump in the night' sounds, but do make a call if headlights appear in the long drive in from the road (2x in 35 yrs). We're both in our late 70's, and the local sheriff's and county LEO's have all shot on my pasture range....we'd get a jiffy response if we called, but it'd take 15 to 20 minutes to get here. On the first floor is my German Short-hair who's raison d'eter is announcing all arivals.

Best regards, and keep your powder dry....Rod

I keep this on my nightstand.

If some pesky animal needs to be dispatched in the middle of the night... no need to wake everybody up doing it.

Then again, I also have this leaning up against my nightstand.

Not a hand gun... but much better at dealing with the other kinds of pesky "animals"...

Mine is a SAR CM9 G2, which is a clone of a Tanfoglio Witness Poly, and kind of a CZ P07 cousin. I have center mass laser on it, and since it was only $250 shipped, I wouldn't be suicidal if I lost it somehow. Totally reliable, one of the (IMHO) all time great grips, and almost impossible to miss with the laser, it's a great setup.

What I have now is a SIG P320 Carry in a Wilson Combat frame, with a Crimson Trace CRM-207 light/laser. In the closet I have a Mossberg SA-20 Tactical shotgun with a Streamlight TLR-1 light. I have done some low-light practice with the SIG, but I need to do the same with the Mossberg.

This Dagger 19+1 ( with a light ) is on my nightstand at this time ..
to be used till I get to one of my shotguns ..

As long as we're "just talking" here....how about this:
What about broadening the category of nightstand gun to include wilderness sidearm? Or vice-versa?
( I am looking for an excuse to dip my toe into the 10mm pool.)
A double duty 10mm glock 20 or SA XD with high cap magazine, light, and maybe a rmr......miiiiiight be a good bedside gun.
No way I'd keep my 10mms for a nightstand gun. Thats a lot of flash and noise. My 10s 357s and 44s and such are loud outside. No way I'd want to use them inside

I have a vaultec beside my bed. Has a remote button I can hit and forego the passcode. Awesome safes. Has a 2 week or so battery life when I go on vacation. I leave it plugged in at home. Has an app if you want but you don't have to have it. It logs failed attempts to open it. Gives you date and time. Also can be opened with your cell. Highly recommended. Had it for years.

But to the point of the thread, In it I have a Glock 22 (.40) with a tlr. Any number of guns would suit me fine. My sig 320 or most any gun with a consistent trigger. I have collected many da/sa guns. Beretta 96, usp,226, p97,410 smith.....I don't think they are as good for a nightstand. Two pulls.

And I saw troopers and wildlife guys struggle. A guy I shoot with trained both and would tell you the same. (and was a retired wildlife guy himself, huge 229/226 fan, son is a Trooper). Our trooper carried the Beretta for 20 years and now a 229. Wildlife is 229. I won't part with mine. But my opinion has changed over the years.

For me, the nightstand gun is decidedly NOT the EDC piece and not used for any other purpose, so there's never a reason for it not to be there. It's a full size auto with a light attached, preferably with night sights or a red dot. Right now it's a 1911 rail gun with night sights, a Streamlight and 10rd Wilson mags.

I like sw governor with federal 410 handgun buck, speed loader or 45 acp jhp, Barnes or a speed strip of Hornady 45 colt jhp

And a 686+ 2.5, 7 rounds Buffalo bore lswchp, speed loader of same

That piece and load are my go-to for the nightstand also, with several moonclips of .45 ACP jhp as reloads.

Backup recently has been my S&W 60 Pro loaded with +P .38 hollow points -- mainly because it's currently my only piece with a CT laser sight.

Show Me - the one advantage of a revolver over a semi is that you don't have to rack it first, possibly delaying you or giving yourself away by the sound. Granted, you won't have as many shots but if you're awakened in the middle of the night, your muscles and co-ordination won't be in full play. The fewer things you have to do or think about lets you "get moving" faster.
I keep a 5-shot SP-101 in .38 Special beside the bed BUT I have a 12 ga. SxS, my .357 revolver, and a rifle on a gunrack on the other side of the bed.
Just saying - - . ;)

If your keeping a fully loaded revolver that all you have to do is pull the trigger....why would the semi auto not already be chambered so all you have to do is pull the trigger?

I'm missing it?

My CZ 75 SP-01 with 18 Federal 147 gr HST rounds on board sits on mine.

Stay safe.
I have the same gun…sorta CZ 75 sp-01 shadow target 2 with 20 rounds of 124 grain gold dots. It’s on the dresser but I’m sure I will grab the gun I carry everyday. Sig p226 357 sig with 125 grain gold dots. But I’m just as comfortable with either one.

Excellent choices, both!

(Let’s all hope we all never have to find out how our nightstand picks perform. 🙏)

Stay safe.
